What Do You Think About Data Representation? (Yr 8)

Yeah! I asked my son same question. Like - What is data representation? After thinking for a while, wanna know what he said to me? He simply answered "CARD". I didn't even hesitate to tell him what I expected. That's, data representation is how computer stores data. Though not explicit enough, but for a 4 year old child, I think it's good enough.

These few fill-in-the-gap exercise will give an introductory definition of data representation:

  1. A _____ device stores all data; audio, text, images and more as numbers. a) solar b) electronic c) digital d) analogue
  2. Data _______ is about understanding how each type of data is processed, stored and displayed within a device, and what impacts this has on how types of data are used. a) cycle b) representation c) file d) integration
The good part is that he is not all that wrong because C stands for computable, A stands for addressable, R stands for retrievable and D stands for digital. So, this is my take on my son's definition of data representation:
Data representation is a computable, addressable, retrievable and digital format for writing data.
